An Overview of 904L Duplex Stainless Steel
904L duplex stainless steel is a high-performance, super-austenitic stainless steel known for its exceptional resistance to corrosion in demanding environments. Its low carbon content and high alloying with nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and copper make it particularly suitable for applications where standard stainless steels like 316L or 317L are inadequate. This material is characterized by a fully austenitic structure and is less sensitive to the precipitation of intermetallic phases compared to other high-molybdenum austenitic steels.
Key Chemical Composition of 904L Stainless Steel
The chemical composition of 904L stainless steel is the foundation of its superior corrosion resistance. The key elements include:
-
Carbon (C): ≤ 0.02% - The very low carbon content minimizes the risk of carbide precipitation during welding or heat treatment, enhancing resistance to intergranular corrosion.
-
Nickel (Ni): 23.0 - 28.0% - High nickel content provides resistance to stress corrosion cracking and reduces corrosion speed in pits and crevices.
-
Chromium (Cr): 19.0 - 23.0% - Enhances the formation of a protective passive film, improving general corrosion resistance.
-
Molybdenum (Mo): 4.0 - 5.0% - Significantly increases resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride-containing environments.
-
Copper (Cu): 1.0 - 2.0% - The addition of copper grants the alloy excellent resistance to reducing acids like sulfuric acid.
-
Other elements include Manganese (Mn) ≤2.0%, Silicon (Si) ≤1.0%, Phosphorus (P) ≤0.045%, and Sulfur (S) ≤0.035%, with the balance being Iron (Fe).
Mechanical Properties of 904L Stainless Steel
Under the solution-annealed condition, 904L stainless steel plates exhibit the following minimum mechanical properties at room temperature, conforming to ASTM A240 requirements:
-
Tensile Strength (σb): ≥ 490 MPa
-
Yield Strength (RP0.2): ≥ 215 MPa
-
Elongation (A5): ≥ 35%
-
Density: 8.0 - 8.24 g/cm³
-
Melting Point: 1300 - 1390 °C
These properties ensure that 904L duplex stainless steel offers a robust combination of strength and ductility, suitable for fabricating pressure vessels and other critical equipment.
Corrosion Resistance and Primary Applications
The corrosion resistance of 904L stainless steel is outstanding across a wide range of media. It demonstrates excellent performance in sulfuric acid at concentrations up to 98% at temperatures up to 40°C, and in phosphoric acid across a concentration range of 0-85%. The alloy also shows good resistance to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and crevice corrosion. While its use in hydrochloric acid is limited to low concentrations (1-2%), its performance in this range is superior to conventional stainless steels. Due to its high nickel content, it maintains excellent resistance in chloride solutions, concentrated hydroxide environments, and atmospheres rich in hydrogen sulfide.
The remarkable corrosion performance of 904L stainless steel makes it the material of choice for numerous demanding industries and applications. Common uses include:
-
Petroleum and Petrochemical Equipment: Reactors, pressure vessels, and other critical components.
-
Sulfuric Acid Storage and Transport Equipment: Heat exchangers and piping systems.
-
Flue Gas Desulfurization Systems in Power Plants: Absorber towers, ducting, dampers, and internal components.
-
Seawater Processing Equipment and Seawater Heat Exchangers.
-
Organic Acid Treatment Systems: Scrubbers and fans.
-
Pulp and Paper Industry Equipment.
-
Pharmaceutical and Chemical Processing Equipment: Centrifuges, reactors, and vessels.
-
Food Processing Plants: Equipment for sauces, brines, and other ingredients.
Fabrication and Welding Considerations
904L stainless steel offers good weldability and machinability. Common welding methods include shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and inert gas shielded welding. It is recommended to use matching filler materials such as ER385 welding wire and E385 electrodes. Preheating is generally not required, but in cold environments, uniform heating of the joint area is advised to avoid moisture condensation, ensuring the local temperature does not exceed 100°C. Post-weld heat treatment is typically unnecessary.
For machining, 904L stainless steel has a tendency to work harden and can be gummy. It is recommended to use positive rake angle carbide tools and employ sulfurized and chlorinated cutting oils. Machining processes should be designed to minimize work hardening, avoiding slow cutting speeds and light feeds.
