The Recent Success Story: ASTM B444 Alloy 625 Grade 2 Seamless Pipe to Korea
ZYTC Alloy recently completed a demanding order for ASTM B444 Alloy 625 Gr.2 Seamless Pipe destined for a critical application in South Korea. The specification called for 25.4mm × 1.65mm dimensions in the solution annealed condition – a challenging combination that required precision and expertise. When the customer urgently needed the material and had no existing inventory, our team rose to the challenge. We re-rolled the required Alloy 625 specification from alternative stock sizes and completed the entire production cycle – from re-rolling through solution annealing and final inspection – in just 10 days. Every step of the process was executed in strict accordance with our standardized, process-driven, and professional production and inspection protocols. The finished ASTM B444 Alloy 625 Seamless Pipe passed all quality tests and was delivered on time, meeting the customer's critical schedule without compromising on quality.
Chemical Composition of Alloy 625 (UNS N06625)
The exceptional performance of Alloy 625 begins with its carefully balanced chemistry. Alloy 625 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with the addition of niobium (columbium), which interacts with molybdenum to provide high strength without the need for additional heat treatment. The Alloy 625 chemical composition, as specified by ASTM B444, is as follows:
| Element | Content (%) |
|---|---|
| Nickel (Ni) | 58.00 min |
| Chromium (Cr) | 20.00 – 23.00 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 8.00 – 10.00 |
| Niobium + Tantalum (Nb+Ta) | 3.15 – 4.15 |
| Iron (Fe) | 5.0 max |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.50 max |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.50 max |
| Aluminum (Al) | 0.40 max |
| Titanium (Ti) | 0.40 max |
| Carbon (C) | 0.10 max |
| Sulfur (S) | 0.015 max |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.015 max |
This nickel-chromium-molybdenum-niobium composition gives Alloy 625 its renowned combination of strength and corrosion resistance, making it the material of choice for the most demanding environments.
Mechanical Properties of Alloy 625
Alloy 625 delivers outstanding mechanical performance across a wide temperature range. Under the ASTM B444 standard, Alloy 625 is available in two heat-treatment grades:
| Grade | Condition | Tensile Strength min. ksi (MPa) | Yield Strength (0.2% offset) min. ksi (MPa) | Elongation min. % |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 1 | Annealed | 120 (827) | 60 (414) | 30 |
| Grade 2 | Solution Annealed | 100 (690) | 40 (276) | 30 |
For the recent Korean order, ZYTC Alloy supplied ASTM B444 Alloy 625 Grade 2 in the solution annealed condition. Grade 2 is specifically designed for service at temperatures exceeding 1100°F (593°C), where improved creep properties and fatigue resistance are required.
Alloy 625 also exhibits excellent physical properties: density of 8.44 g/cm³, melting range of 1290°C – 1350°C, and a modulus of elasticity of 207 MPa. From cryogenic temperatures up to 980°C (1800°F), Alloy 625 maintains its strength and toughness, with outstanding resistance to oxidation and thermal fatigue.
Applications and Uses of Alloy 625
The unique combination of properties makes Alloy 625 indispensable across multiple industries:
-
Aerospace: Engine exhaust systems, aircraft ducting, land-based turbine components, and structural parts requiring high strength and fatigue resistance
-
Marine Engineering: Subsea flowlines, seawater equipment, submarine propulsion motors, and desalination plant components where chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking resistance is critical
-
Oil & Gas: Offshore sour oil and gas production, flare stacks, and high-pressure equipment
-
Chemical Processing: Reaction vessels, distillation columns, heat exchangers, transfer piping, valves, and pumps handling corrosive media
-
Nuclear Industry: Reactor-core components, control-rod components, and nuclear fuel processing equipment
-
Pollution Control: Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems and waste incineration equipment
Alloy 625 demonstrates exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, corrosion fatigue, and erosion corrosion, while maintaining its mechanical properties up to approximately 450°C. Its immunity to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking makes it particularly valuable in seawater and brine environments.
