ZYTC Alloy Completes Alloy 718 Round Bar Export to Germany – Precision That Matters

At ZYTC Alloy, we believe that quality is not a matter of degrees—it is a standard. Recently, we successfully completed and delivered an order of Alloy 718 round bar to a German client, manufactured strictly in accordance with AMS 5663P specifications. The product was supplied in the solution-treated and precipitation-aged (mill-annealed and aged) condition, with dimensions of 115(+2) × 160(+5) mm.


During our final inspection, we discovered that four (4) pieces measured 0.3 mm longer than the contract tolerance. While this deviation might seem negligible to some, at ZYTC Alloy, 0.3 mm is 0.3 mm over the limit. With ample delivery lead time, we re-cut the excess length on all four pieces, bringing them back to full contract compliance. The Alloy 718 round Bars passed final inspection and were shipped to the client with full certification.

What Is Alloy 718?

Alloy 718 (UNS N07718, W.Nr. 2.4668) is an austenitic nickel-based superalloy that is precipitation-hardenable through the addition of niobium (columbium). It exhibits exceptional high yield tensile strength and creep-rupture properties at temperatures up to 1300°F (704°C), along with oxidation resistance up to 1800°F (982°C). The sluggish age-hardening characteristics of Alloy 718 allow for annealing and welding without the risk of spontaneous hardening during heating and cooling.

Alloy 718 is non-magnetic, maintains significant corrosion and oxidation resistance, and is widely used in critical applications including jet engines, gas turbines, rocket motors, nuclear reactors, downhole drilling components, and high-temperature fasteners.

While both Alloy 718 and Alloy X750 (UNS N07750) are precipitation-hardened nickel superalloys, they differ significantly in composition, strengthening mechanisms, and performance envelopes.

Alloy 718 achieves higher room-temperature yield strength through a dominant γ″ (Ni₃Nb) precipitate phase, which forms in greater volume fraction due to its higher niobium content. Alloy 718 is also significantly easier to weld and less susceptible to strain-age cracking compared to Alloy X750. At temperatures above 650°C, however, the γ″ phase in Alloy 718 transforms to the stable delta (δ) phase, reducing strength above 700°C—whereas Alloy X750's γ′ phase remains effective to approximately 870°C.

Alloy 718 also demonstrates superior stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance relative to Alloy X750 in high-temperature water environments. For applications requiring maximum yield strength below 650°C with excellent weldability, Alloy 718 is the material of choice.
