What is Ti-6246 Titanium Alloy?
Ti-6246 (also designated Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo, UNS R56260) is a high-performance alpha-beta titanium alloy known for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, deep hardenability, and outstanding performance at elevated temperatures. The alloy was metallurgically engineered to deliver massive deep-hardenability and extreme creep resistance for critical structural components.
Ti-6246 offers ultimate tensile strength around 1100 MPa – nearly double that of Ti-6Al-4V – while remaining relatively light with a density of approximately 4.54–4.65 g/cm³. The alloy maintains superior strength at high temperatures up to 538°C (1000°F) and demonstrates excellent corrosion resistance in aggressive environments.

Applications of Ti-6246
Ti-6246 is extensively used in demanding environments across multiple industries:
-
Aerospace: Compressor discs, fan blades, impellers, spacers, seals, and airframe components
-
Oil & Gas: Downhole tubulars, subsea wellhead components, riser systems, pressure housings, and completion equipment for sour service applications
-
High-Performance Motorsport: Lightweight drivetrain components and structural parts
-
Industrial Equipment: High-strength forged components requiring temperature resistance up to 460°C
The alloy's outstanding corrosion resistance in hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) environments makes it particularly suitable for geothermal and sour well applications.
Ti-6246 vs Ti-6242: Key Differences
| Feature | Ti-6246 | Ti-6242 |
|---|---|---|
| Alloy Designation | Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo | Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo-0.08Si |
| UNS Number | R56260 | R54620 |
| Molybdenum Content | 5.5 – 6.5% | 1.8 – 2.2% |
| Alloy Type | Alpha-Beta (near-beta) | Near-Alpha |
| Maximum Service Temp | ~538°C (1000°F) | ~540°C |
| Creep Resistance | Up to ~530°C | Up to ~540°C |
| Heat Treatment Response | Greater response | Moderate response |
| Strength Level | Higher mechanical properties | Lower mechanical properties |
| Primary Standard | AMS 4981 | AMS 4919 |
| Typical Applications | Compressor discs, oil & gas tools | Jet engine compressor components |
Ti-6246 exhibits even higher mechanical properties than Ti-6242 and offers superior creep resistance up to approximately 530°C. The higher molybdenum content in Ti-6246 makes it more of a beta titanium alloy compared to Ti-6242, which is classified as a near-alpha alloy. This gives Ti-6246 a greater response to heat treatment and enhanced deep hardenability in thick cross-sections.
While Ti-6242 demonstrates good creep and fatigue properties up to 540°C and is widely used in jet engine compressors, Ti-6246 is preferred for applications requiring higher strength and superior corrosion resistance in sour service environments.
