A286 , also known as UNS S66286, Grade 660, or W.Nr. 1.4980, is an age-hardenable iron-nickel-chromium superalloy that stands as one of the original superalloys. Designed for applications demanding high strength and superior corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures up to 700°C (1290°F), A286 delivers exceptional performance across the most demanding industrial environments. The alloy’s precipitation-hardening characteristics, combined with its excellent fabricability, make A286 the material of choice for critical components in aerospace, medical, turbine, automotive, and oil & gas sectors.
Chemical Composition of A286 (ASTM A453 Grade 660 / UNS S66286)
The carefully balanced chemistry of A286 provides its signature combination of strength, corrosion resistance, and thermal stability. Below is the typical chemical composition range for A286 superalloy:
| Element | Min % | Max % |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.03 | 0.08 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 1.00 | 2.00 |
| Silicon (Si) | – | 0.50 |
| Phosphorus (P) | – | 0.040 |
| Sulfur (S) | – | 0.030 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 13.50 | 16.00 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 24.00 | 27.00 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 1.00 | 1.50 |
| Titanium (Ti) | 1.90 | 2.35 |
| Aluminum (Al) | – | 0.35 |
| Vanadium (V) | 0.10 | 0.50 |
| Boron (B) | 0.001 | 0.010 |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance | – |
The nominal composition of A286 is approximately Iron 50%, Nickel 25%, Chromium 15%, Titanium 2%, Molybdenum 1.3%, with smaller additions of Aluminum and Vanadium. This iron-base formulation gives A286 a significant cost advantage over nickel-base superalloys while delivering comparable high-temperature performance.
Mechanical Properties of A286 (ASTM A453 Grade 660)
A286 achieves its remarkable mechanical properties through a solution treatment followed by precipitation hardening (aging) . The alloy is typically solution treated at 982°C (1800°F) and aged at 704–760°C (1300–1400°F) for 16 hours. Below are the key mechanical properties of A286 in the aged condition per ASTM A453 Grade 660:
| Property | ASTM A453 Gr.660 (Class A/B) |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength, Ultimate (min) | 895 MPa (130 ksi) |
| Yield Strength, 0.2% Offset (min) | 585 MPa (85 ksi) |
| Elongation (min) | 15% |
| Reduction of Area (min) | 18% |
| Hardness (Brinell) | 248–341 HB |
| Hardness (Rockwell C) | 24–35 HRC |
Additional physical properties of A286:
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Density | 7.94 g/cm³ (0.287 lb/in³) |
| Melting Range | 1371–1427°C (2500–2600°F) |
| Modulus of Elasticity | 205 kN/mm² (29,733 ksi) |
| Modulus of Rigidity | 71.5 kN/mm² (10,370 ksi) |
| Coefficient of Expansion | 16.4 μm/m·°C (20–100°C) |
In the solution treated condition, A286 hardness is 140–180 Brinell; after aging, hardness increases to 248–321 Brinell. The alloy exhibits excellent oxidation resistance up to 982°C (1800°F) and maintains mechanical integrity in continuous service up to 704°C (1300°F).
Applications of A286
A286 is one of the most versatile superalloys available today, serving industries where reliability, strength, and thermal stability are non-negotiable.
Aerospace & Turbine Applications: A286 is extensively used in jet engines, gas turbines, superchargers, and afterburner components. Typical parts include turbine wheels and blades, casings, frames, shafts, tail cones, thrust nozzles, and fasteners. The alloy’s thermal expansion coefficient (16.0 x 10⁻⁶/°C) closely matches that of austenitic stainless steels (17.0 x 10⁻⁶/°C), making A286 the preferred material for high-temperature bolting on stainless steel flanges where thermal expansion mismatch must be minimized.
Medical Devices: A286 finds critical applications in the medical industry, including surgical instruments, medical stents, tubing, and implantable devices. Its biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and high strength make A286 an ideal material for medical components that demand absolute reliability.
Automotive & Power Generation: In the automotive sector, A286 is used for engine and manifold components exposed to extreme heat and stress. The alloy is also specified for power generation turbines, steam turbine bolting, and HRSG connections.
Oil & Gas and Industrial: A286 is widely used in offshore oil and gas equipment, refinery heat exchangers, petrochemical reactors, marine platforms, and pharmaceutical processing equipment. Its corrosion resistance in sulfurous atmospheres at elevated temperatures even surpasses that of some nickel-base alloys.
