What is Alloy 625 Gr.2?
Alloy 625 Gr.2, also known as Inconel 625, UNS N06625, or DIN 2.4856, is a nonmagnetic, corrosion-resistant, and oxidation-resistant nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy. Its outstanding strength and toughness from cryogenic temperatures up to 2000°F (1093°C) are derived from the solid solution effects of niobium and molybdenum in a nickel-chromium matrix.
ASTM B443 covers two grades of this alloy. Alloy 625 Grade 1 (annealed) is normally employed in service temperatures up to 1100°F (593°C). Alloy 625 Gr.2 (solution annealed), on the other hand, is specifically designed for service temperatures above 1100°F (593°C) when resistance to creep and rupture is required. The solution annealing treatment for Grade 2 is achieved by heating to approximately 1093°C (2000°F) followed by rapid quenching, which enhances creep and rupture strength for high-temperature applications.
Chemical Composition of Alloy 625 Gr.2 (UNS N06625)
The exceptional performance of Alloy 625 Gr.2 comes from its precise chemistry. According to ASTM B443, the chemical composition limits are as follows:
| Element | Content (%) |
|---|---|
| Nickel (Ni) | 58.0 min |
| Chromium (Cr) | 20.0 – 23.0 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 8.0 – 10.0 |
| Niobium (Nb) + Tantalum (Ta) | 3.15 – 4.15 |
| Iron (Fe) | 5.0 max |
| Cobalt (Co) | 1.0 max |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.50 max |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.50 max |
| Aluminum (Al) | 0.40 max |
| Titanium (Ti) | 0.40 max |
| Carbon (C) | 0.10 max |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.015 max |
| Sulfur (S) | 0.015 max |
The high chromium and molybdenum content gives Alloy 625 Gr.2 outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking. With a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) exceeding 45, Alloy 625 Gr.2 stands among the most highly-alloyed corrosion-resistant materials available.
Mechanical Properties of Alloy 625 Gr.2
Alloy 625 Gr.2 exhibits excellent strength and ductility from cryogenic temperatures up to 1800°F (982°C). The mechanical property requirements for Alloy 625 Gr.2 as specified in ASTM B443 are:
| Property | Alloy 625 Gr.2 (Solution Annealed) |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength, min | 100 ksi (690 MPa) |
| Yield Strength (0.2% offset), min | 40 ksi (276 MPa) |
| Elongation, min | 30% |
For reference, Grade 1 (annealed) offers higher yield strength at 60 ksi (414 MPa) and tensile strength at 120 ksi (827 MPa), while Grade 2 trades some of that strength for enhanced creep and rupture resistance at elevated temperatures.
Additional physical properties of Alloy 625 include:
-
Density: 0.305 lb/in³ (8.44 g/cm³)
-
Modulus of Elasticity: 29.8 × 10⁶ psi (205 GPa)
-
Melting Range: 2350 – 2460°F (1290 – 1350°C)
-
Thermal Conductivity: 5.7 Btu/ft hr °F
-
Electrical Resistivity: 50.8 Microohm-in
Alloy 625 Gr.2 retains high creep-rupture strength and oxidation resistance even after prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures. Its fatigue strength and thermal fatigue resistance are also remarkable.
Applications of Alloy 625 Gr.2
Thanks to its unique combination of high strength, fabricability, and exceptional corrosion resistance, Alloy 625 Gr.2 is widely used across demanding industries:
-
Aerospace: Turbine shroud rings, thrust reversers, jet engine exhaust systems, and gas turbine ducting
-
Oil & Gas: Wellhead components, downhole equipment, sheathing for corrosive/sour service, flaring systems in refineries and offshore platforms
-
Chemical Processing: Equipment for manufacturing sulfuric, phosphoric, nitric, and hydrochloric acid; catalyst tubes for hydrogen dissociators
-
Nuclear Power: Heat exchangers and steam generators where high temperatures and radiation-induced embrittlement pose challenges
-
Marine: Seawater-exposed equipment and offshore engineering plants
-
Power Generation: Production pipe systems and linings of risers in oil production
