Alloy 230 (UNS N06230) Forging Rings: Precision Manufacturing to AMS 5891C for Gas Turbine Applications

2026-06-12

ZYTC Alloy has proudly completed a landmark export order of Alloy 230 (UNS N06230) forging rings to a customer in Turkey. These Alloy 230 forging rings are produced to AMS 5891C and are destined for use in turbine engines, undergoing rigorous SEP 1923 ultrasonic testing. The successful delivery represents ZYTC Alloy‘s unwavering commitment to standardization, streamlined processes, and specialized expertise.

What is Alloy 230(Uns N06230)?

Alloy 230 is a nickel-chromium-tungsten-molybdenum (Ni-Cr-W-Mo) superalloy that combines excellent high-temperature strength, outstanding resistance to oxidizing environments up to 2100°F (1149°C) for prolonged exposures, premier resistance to nitriding environments, and excellent long-term thermal stability. The alloy is readily fabricated and formed, offering lower thermal expansion characteristics than most high-temperature alloys, along with pronounced resistance to grain coarsening with prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Alloy 230 is solution treated in the range of 2150 to 2275°F (1177 to 1246°C) and rapidly cooled for optimum properties. Haynes 230 is often considered the best balance of strength, thermal stability, oxidation resistance, thermal cycling resistance and fabricability of any major high-temperature alloy. Alloy N06230 is a solid-solution-strengthened material which combines excellent high-temperature strength with good fabricability at room temperature. Haynes® 230® alloy may be forged or otherwise hot-worked, providing it is held at 2150°F (1177°C) for a time sufficient to bring the entire piece to temperature. As a consequence of its good ductility, 230® alloy is also readily formed by cold-working. All hot- or cold-worked parts should be annealed and rapidly cooled in order to restore the best balance of properties.

Chemical Composition of Alloy 230 (UNS N06230)

The nominal chemical composition (weight %) of Alloy 230 per AMS 5891C is as follows:

Element Weight %
Nickel (Ni) Balance (approx. 57)
Chromium (Cr) 20.0 – 24.0
Tungsten (W) 13.0 – 15.0
Molybdenum (Mo) 1.0 – 3.0
Iron (Fe) 3.0 max.
Cobalt (Co) 5.0 max.
Carbon (C) 0.05 – 0.15
Silicon (Si) 0.25 – 0.75
Manganese (Mn) 0.30 – 1.00
Aluminum (Al) 0.20 – 0.50
Lanthanum (La) 0.005 – 0.050
Boron (B) ≤ 0.015
Phosphorus (P) ≤ 0.030
Sulfur (S) ≤ 0.015

Alloy UNS N06230 has a fully austenitic structure with a microstructure that contains quantities of secondary carbide particles (predominantly M₆C and M₂₃C₆), which contribute significantly to the alloy‘s strength. In the solution annealed condition, the grain size is typically ASTM No. 6. Haynes alloy 230 offers particularly good resistance to oxidation at temperatures greater than 1800°F (980°C). It also offers good resistance to carburization and nitridation.

Mechanical Properties of Alloy 230

Alloy 230 products exhibit excellent mechanical properties over a broad range of temperatures. The alloy‘s strength at temperatures greater than 1800°F (982°C) is of particular importance to designers and engineers. Below are the typical room-temperature mechanical properties of solution-annealed Alloy 230:

Property Value
Tensile Strength, Ultimate (UTS) ≥ 758 MPa (110 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset) ≥ 310 MPa (45 ksi)
Elongation at Break ≥ 40%
Hardness 150 HB
Density 8.97 g/cm³
Melting Point 1330°C (2426°F)
Modulus of Elasticity (RT) 211 GPa

Alloy N06230’s resistance to high-temperature corrosion in conjunction with high strength enhances its usefulness across demanding industrial applications. Haynes 230 alloy has excellent forming and welding characteristics, making it one of the most fabricable high-temperature superalloys on the market. The effect of temperature on mechanical properties demonstrates that Alloy 230 maintains exceptional strength even at elevated temperatures, with a modulus of elasticity of 150 GPa at 1000°C (1830°F). Haynes® 230® alloy is particularly effective for very long-term applications at temperatures of 1200°F (650°C) or more, and is capable of outlasting stainless steels and nickel alloys by as much as 100 to 1 depending upon the temperature. Alternatively, the higher strength of 230® alloy allows for the use of design section thicknesses as much as 75 percent thinner than lesser alloys with no loss in load-bearing capability.

Applications of Alloy 230 (UNS N06230)

Alloy 230 combines properties which make it ideally suited for a wide variety of component applications in the aerospace and power industries. Key applications include:

  • Gas turbine components: combustion cans, transition ducts, flame holders, thermocouple sheaths, and other important gas turbine components

  • Industrial heating industry: furnace retorts, chains and fixtures, burner flame shrouds, recuperator internals, dampers, nitriding furnace internals, heat-treating baskets, grates, trays, sparger tubes, and cyclone internals

  • Chemical process industry: catalyst grid supports in ammonia burners, high-strength thermocouple protection tubes, high-temperature heat exchangers, ducts, and high-temperature bellows

  • Power generation: fossil energy plants and heat exchangers

  • Heat treatment: heat-treating baskets, fixtures, muffles/retorts, and wire mesh belts

Alloy 230 plate is a popular alternative to stainless steel and nickel-based alloys due to its delivering exceptional strength at high temperatures. Haynes alloy 230 is solution treated at 2150 to 2275°F followed by rapid cooling, and is supplied in this condition (as per AMS 5891 and AMS 5878). Alloy 230 forging rings are specifically used in turbine engine combustion liner hardware, transition ducts, and structural brackets for gas turbine hot section assembly.
