Alloy 188 (UNS R30188) AMS 5608 – High-Temperature Cobalt-Based Superalloy for Gas Turbine & Aerospace Applications

2026-07-28

Alloy 188 (UNS R30188), also known as Haynes® 188, is a cobalt-nickel-chromium-tungsten alloy that delivers exceptional performance in the most demanding high-temperature environments. As a cobalt-based superalloy, Alloy 188 combines outstanding high-temperature strength with excellent oxidation resistance up to 1095°C (2000°F) for prolonged exposures. This AMS 5608-compliant material has become the material of choice for gas turbine engines, aerospace components, and industrial high-temperature applications.

At ZYTC Alloy, we specialize in the production and supply of Alloy 188 in multiple forms including Plate, sheet, strip, wire, bar, tube, and forgings. We also offer custom machining and fabrication services to customer drawings, strictly adhering to Alloy 188 specifications.

Chemical Composition of Alloy 188 (AMS 5608)

The superior properties of Alloy 188 are derived from its carefully balanced chemical composition. Per AMS 5608 specifications, the nominal composition of Alloy 188 is as follows:

Element Weight %
Cobalt (Co) Balance (approximately 39%)
Chromium (Cr) 20.0 – 24.0%
Nickel (Ni) 20.0 – 24.0%
Tungsten (W) 13.0 – 16.0%
Iron (Fe) 3.0% max
Manganese (Mn) 1.25% max
Silicon (Si) 0.20 – 0.50%
Carbon (C) 0.05 – 0.15%
Lanthanum (La) 0.03 – 0.15%
Boron (B) 0.015% max
Phosphorus (P) 0.02% max
Sulfur (S) 0.015% max

Alloy 188 is a solid solution-strengthened cobalt-based alloy. The high chromium content, combined with small lanthanum additions, produces an extremely tenacious and protective oxide scale that shields the material from high-temperature degradation. Tungsten provides solid-solution strengthening, while nickel enhances the alloy's overall stability and fabricability.

Mechanical Properties of Alloy 188

Alloy 188 exhibits remarkable mechanical properties that make it indispensable for critical high-temperature applications. The typical mechanical properties of annealed Alloy 188 per AMS 5608 include:

  • Tensile Strength: 130 – 160 ksi (900 – 1100 MPa)

  • Yield Strength (0.2% offset): Approximately 450 – 490 MPa

  • Elongation: Approximately 45%

  • Hardness: Up to 302 HB

  • Density: 8.98 – 9.14 g/cm³

  • Modulus of Elasticity: 232 GPa (33.7 × 10³ ksi)

  • Melting Range: 1300°C – 1360°C

Alloy 188 is not age hardenable but can be cold worked to achieve higher tensile and yield strength – up to 250 ksi (1725 MPa) in spring temper. The suggested operating temperature range for Alloy 188 extends from -300°F to 2000°F (-185°C to 1095°C).

Alloy 188 maintains excellent high-temperature strength even at elevated temperatures. The alloy exhibits excellent resistance to sulfate deposit hot corrosion and very good resistance to oxidizing environments. It also offers excellent resistance to molten chloride salts and good resistance to gaseous sulfidation.

Applications of Alloy 188

Alloy 188 is widely used in applications where materials are exposed to extreme heat, oxidation, and mechanical stress. Typical Alloy 188 applications include:

  • Combustor liners and combustion cans in gas turbine engines

  • Transition ducts and afterburner components

  • Flame holders and spray bars

  • Turbine rotors and nozzle diaphragm valves

  • Furnace liners and flame hoods

  • Jet engine components and heat shields

  • Industrial furnace components

  • High-temperature components in the aerospace industry

Alloy 188 is supplied to military and commercial aerospace, chemical processing, land-based gas turbines, and nuclear markets. It is a preferred material for components requiring exceptional strength, oxidation resistance, and reliability at elevated temperatures.
