What is 316LVM?
316LVM is a vacuum-melted, low-carbon austenitic stainless steel specifically developed for medical and surgical implants. The “VM” designation stands for Vacuum Melted, which guarantees superior cleanliness and uniformity – essential for biocompatible applications. 316LVM meets the requirements of ASTM F138, *ISO 5832-1*, and ASTM F139 for wrought stainless steel used in surgical devices.
Chemical Composition of 316LVM (ASTM F138)
| Element | Weight % |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.030 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 2.00 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.025 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.010 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 0.75 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 17.0 – 19.0 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 13.0 – 15.0 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 2.25 – 3.00 |
| Copper (Cu) | ≤ 0.50 |
| Nitrogen (N) | ≤ 0.10 |
Iron (Fe) balances the rest. The low carbon content of 316LVM prevents intergranular corrosion after welding or thermal exposure, while molybdenum enhances pitting resistance.
Mechanical Properties (Cold Worked 316LVM Bar – Condition A)
For Ф8mm cold worked 316LVM bar as delivered to India, typical mechanical values per ASTM F138 are:
-
Tensile Strength (UTS): ≥ 860 MPa (125 ksi)
-
Yield Strength (0.2% offset): ≥ 690 MPa (100 ksi)
-
Elongation (4D): ≥ 12%
The cold worked condition significantly increases strength while maintaining adequate ductility for medical device manufacturing.

Key Applications of 316LVM
Thanks to its excellent corrosion resistance, non-magnetic properties, and high fatigue strength, 316LVM is widely used in:
-
Orthopedic implants (bone screws, plates, nails)
-
Cardiovascular devices (stents, guidewires)
-
Dental instruments and surgical tools
-
Spinal fixation systems
-
External fixators and intramedullary nails
The 316LVM bar shipped to India will be further processed into precision surgical instruments for the local medical industry.
