15-5PH Stainless Steel – Complete Technical Datasheet, Properties, Applications & Comparison with 17-4PH

2026-08-26

ZYTC Alloy is proud to announce the successful completion and delivery of a recent export order of 15-5PH stainless steel Plate to Russia. The order consisted of 15-5PH duplex stainless steel plate manufactured to ASTM A693 standards, with specifications of 5*1000*2000mm in solution annealed delivery condition.

As part of our commitment to standardized, process-driven, and specialized production and inspection procedures, our quality control team detected that certain areas at the four corners of the 15-5PH plates did not fully meet the required thickness tolerances. After consultation and confirmation with the customer, the non-conforming sections were precisely removed, resulting in final dimensions of 5*930*1930mm. This ensured that the delivered 15-5PH stainless steel fully complied with all dimensional requirements while maintaining the superior material properties that define 15-5PH alloy.

What is 15-5PH Stainless Steel?

15-5PH (UNS S15500 / XM-12 / 1.4545) is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel containing approximately 15% Chromium and 5% Nickel. This 15-5PH stainless steel achieves its exceptional strength through a precipitation hardening heat treatment process, combining high strength and hardness with moderate corrosion resistance.

Developed as an improvement over the older 17-4PH, 15-5PH was specifically designed to offer greater toughness, particularly in the through-thickness (short transverse) direction. This makes 15-5PH an ideal choice for applications requiring high transverse strength and toughness.

Chemical Composition of 15-5PH

The carefully balanced chemistry of 15-5PH stainless steel is what gives this precipitation-hardening alloy its unique combination of properties. Below is the chemical composition of 15-5PH per ASTM A693 and AMS 5862/5659 specifications:

Element Weight % (min) Weight % (max)
Carbon (C) - 0.07
Silicon (Si) - 1.00
Manganese (Mn) - 1.00
Phosphorus (P) - 0.030
Sulfur (S) - 0.015
Chromium (Cr) 14.00 15.50
Nickel (Ni) 3.50 5.50
Copper (Cu) 2.50 4.50
Columbium + Tantalum (Cb+Ta) 0.15 0.45
Molybdenum (Mo) - 0.50
Iron (Fe) Balance Balance

Composition per AMS 5862 (Sheet/Plate) and AMS 5659 (Bar/Forgings)

Mechanical Properties of 15-5PH

15-5PH stainless steel offers outstanding mechanical properties that can be tailored through different heat treatment conditions (H900, H925, H1025, H1075, H1100, H1150). The mechanical properties of 15-5PH vary depending on the aging temperature and condition chosen:

Condition Tensile Strength (ksi) Yield Strength 0.2% (ksi) Elongation (% in 2D) Reduction of Area (%) Rockwell C Hardness
Cond A (Solution) - - - - 38 HRC max
H900 190 170 10 35 40-47
H925 170 155 10 38 38-45
H1025 155 145 12 45 34-42
H1075 145 125 13 45 31-38
H1100 140 115 14 45 30-37
H1150 135 105 16 50 28-37

Mechanical properties per AMS 5862 (Sheet/Plate) and AMS 5659 (Bar)

The solution annealed (Cond A) condition of 15-5PH provides maximum formability and machinability, with hardness up to 38 HRC. Subsequent precipitation hardening heat treatments dramatically increase the strength of 15-5PH stainless steel while maintaining good ductility.

Applications of 15-5PH

15-5PH stainless steel is widely used across demanding industries due to its exceptional combination of strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance. Key applications of 15-5PH include:

  • Aerospace Industry: Aircraft components, helicopter parts, landing gear components, fasteners, engine parts, structural components, and marine gas turbine compressor sections

  • Oil & Gas Production: Valves, pumps, couplings, and highly stressed machine parts

  • Nuclear Reactor Components: Where high transverse strength and toughness are critical

  • Medical and Biomedical Equipment: Surgical instruments, tools, valves, and fittings

  • Chemical Processing Equipment: Industrial processing equipment with corrosion resistance requirements

  • Military Structural Components: Defense applications requiring reliable performance

  • Tooling and Mechanical Systems: Shafts, bolts, precision components, injection molds, and extrusion dies

15-5PH vs. 17-4PH – Key Differences

While 15-5PH and 17-4PH are both precipitation-hardening stainless steels, 15-5PH was developed as an improved variant of the older 17-4PH with several distinct advantages:

Feature 15-5PH (UNS S15500) 17-4PH (UNS S17400)
Chromium (Cr) 14.00 – 15.50% 15.50 – 17.50%
Nickel (Ni) 3.50 – 5.50% 3.00 – 5.00%
Copper (Cu) 2.50 – 4.50% 3.00 – 5.00%
Toughness Superior transverse toughness Lower transverse toughness
Mechanical Properties in Large Sections Superior Lower
Forgeability Better Standard
Magnetic Particle Inspection Reliably inspectable Requires penetrant techniques
Ferrite Content Ferrite-free May contain δ-ferrite
Critical Cryogenic Applications Preferred Less preferred

The key advantages of 15-5PH over 17-4PH include:

  • Higher transverse ductility and toughness

  • Superior mechanical properties in larger cross-sections

  • Better forgeability and weldability

  • Reliable magnetic particle inspection capability

  • Ferrite-free microstructure ensuring consistent properties

For critical cryogenic applications, 15-5PH should be given preference over 17-4PH because its impact toughness is generally higher.
