About Alloy
Alloy 20, also known as UNS N08020 or W. Nr 2.4660, is a type of stainless steel that is highly resistant to corrosion and pitting, particularly in acidic environments. It is a chromium-nickel alloy with a minimum of 16% chromium and 24% nickel content, as well as additions of molybdenum, manganese, and copper.
The molybdenum addition enhances the alloy's resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, making it a popular choice for applications involving sulfuric, hydrochloric, and phosphoric acids. Additionally, Alloy 20 has good resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and is often used in equipment for the production of nitric acid and other chemicals.
Alloy 20 has a relatively high carbon content, which can lead to the formation of carbides and precipitates, potentially reducing the material's resistance to corrosion. To mitigate this issue, a low-carbon version, Alloy 20Cb-3, is also available. This version has a reduced carbon content and higher levels of columbium (niobium) to improve its resistance to corrosion.
Alloy 20 is commonly used in the chemical, petroleum, and pulp and paper industries for equipment such as heat exchangers, reactor vessels, and piping. It is also used in the food and pharmaceutical industries for the production of equipment that comes into contact with acidic food products or chemicals.
In summary, Alloy 20 is a chromium-nickel stainless steel known for its high corrosion resistance, particularly in acidic environments. It is commonly used in the chemical, petroleum, and food processing industries for equipment exposed to corrosive environments.
