About Alloy
The Inconel 601 (UNS N06601, 2.4851) is a nickel-chromium alloy that is widely utilized in various industries due to its exceptional high-temperature oxidation and corrosion resistance. Its composition primarily consists of nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), and aluminum (Al), with smaller amounts of other elements like manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), silicon (Si), carbon (C), and sulfur (S). The balance of the alloy comprises nickel, making it a nickel-based alloy with a minimum content of 58.0% and a maximum of 63.0%.
The high chromium content in Inconel 601, ranging from 21.0% to 25.0%, significantly enhances its resistance to corrosion, particularly in aqueous environments. Additionally, the presence of aluminum (Al) in the alloy, between 1.0% and 1.4%, contributes to its exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in high-temperature conditions.
Inconel 601 exhibits a density of 8.4 g/cm³ and a melting point of 1350°C (2460°F). It has a thermal expansion coefficient of 13.0 µm/m°C (7.17 µin/in°F) at room temperature, which is comparable to other Inconel alloys. The alloy's tensile strength ranges from 450 to 1035 MPa (65,270 to 150,000 psi), depending on the heat treatment, while the yield strength typically falls between 170 to 690 MPa (24,660 to 100,000 psi).
Inconel 601 offers several advantages, including high mechanical strength, formability, and machinability. These properties make it suitable for various applications, such as chemical processing, aerospace, power generation, petrochemical processing, and thermal processing equipment. Its exceptional resistance to high-temperature oxidation and corrosion, as well as its ability to withstand pitting and crevice corrosion, make it an ideal material for these demanding environments.
In summary, Inconel 601 is a versatile and robust nickel-chromium alloy with remarkable high-temperature oxidation and corrosion resistance. Its unique composition and properties make it an ideal material for various industrial applications, particularly in high-temperature and corrosive environments.
